On the eve of a new school year at New Bedford University, a young graduate student in English meets the Hawthorne scholar he's been assigned to as a research assistant. But his duties begin a little earlier than planned, as she frantically enlists him in a scramble to give a fresh new interpretation to one of Hawthorne's stories, so her book can be published in time for tenure.
