The Art of Love explores the life, loves and poetry of the Roman poet Ovid. The inspiration for his poetry was found in the glittering bustle of Rome itself, and his poetry struck a chord with the younger, more liberated set. Under Emperor Augustus laws were introduced that aimed at strengthening family values. Such laws led to a conflict between the artist and the state, leading to Ovid’s exile to a lonely outpost on the Black Sea. Translation of Ovid’s poetry from Latin into English was by John Dryden, named England’s first poet laureate in 1668.
